Fairfax Water has implemented the Lead Free Fairfax program to comply with the updated EPA regulations regarding lead in drinking water. Among other EPA requirements, water utilities nationwide must notify customers via mail if a portion of their water service line is lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or of unknown material. If your water service line falls into one of these 3 categories, you will receive a letter from Fairfax Water stating that your service line is designated as either unknown, lead, or galvanized, requiring replacement.
Letters will be mailed mid-late October. If you do not receive a letter, it may be for one of the following reasons:
- Your service line was installed in 1979 or later, in which case it is designated as non-lead since it was installed after the ban on lead pipes
- You filled out our online survey and identified that your service line is non-lead
- Fairfax Water was able to obtain records on the material of your service line, and those records show that it is non-lead
Did you already fill out our service line survey but still got a letter saying the material of your line is unknown? Thank you for filling out the survey! Fairfax Water staff must review each response submitted, and that may take some time. There is no need to submit the survey again. If we have any questions regarding your response, Fairfax Water staff will reach out to you.
Fairfax Water has been working to identify service line materials throughout our system’s 290,000+ service lines. Efforts to complete our inventory are ongoing. We are asking customers with unknown service line materials to take action to identify their service line material and report it to Fairfax Water. You can submit that information through Fairfax Water’s Customer Self-Reporting Application or print out a form on our website and submit it to us via email or US Mail.
Fairfax Water has always been in compliance with EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule, with results consistently below the EPA’s action level for lead. Our drinking water sources do not contain lead and are not highly corrosive. Additionally, Fairfax Water has a longstanding history of using corrosion-control treatments to prevent lead from leaching into the water from any service lines, plumbing, or kitchen and bathroom fixtures that may contain lead.
