Project

Powhatan Street 16-inch Transmission Main

Powhatan Street 16-inch Transmission Main

This project includes the construction of approximately 3,000 feet of new 16-inch diameter water main in Powhatan Street. Project limits within Powhatan Street include Kirby Road to Franklin Cluster Court, as shown on the map above. This will close a gap in our system between an existing 24-inch water main in Kirby Road and the existing 16-inch water main in Powhatan Street, increasing our transmission capacity to Arlington County for emergency use and improving our flow distribution within the pressure zone. The new water main will be located within Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) right-of-way.

During construction, traffic will be maintained in both directions on Powhatan Street at all times, although temporary lane closures and night work may occasionally be required.  Work hours will be limited to 9:30 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and 9:30 pm to 2 pm on Friday.  Night work, if required, will take place during the hours of 9:00 pm to 5:00 am, Monday through Thursday and 11:00 pm to 5:00 am on Friday.  Construction of the project will last for approximately ten (10) months.

  • Installation of new ductile iron water main
  • Placement of temporary asphalt pavement patches to provide a drivable surface
  • New water main will be tested, connected to existing system, and placed in service
  • Restoration of disturbed areas and final paving of roadways in accordance with VDOT permit requirements
