Bacteria Concerns not present in Fairfax Water System

Frequent Testing Assures a Safe Supply.

September 24, 2004

The recently reported bacteria concerns in the District of Columbia’s water system are not present in the Fairfax Water system.  Fairfax Water performs distribution system testing regularly for Total Coliform Bacteria. Testing will show either the presence or absence of Total Coliform Bacteria.

Fairfax Water collects more than 270 representative samples each month from various locations throughout the distribution system (the series of pipes that bring water to residential and commercial properties) for testing. EPA has set a Maximum Contaminant Level for Total Coliform Bacteria which states "No more than 5% of the monthly samples may be Total Coliform positive.” Testing has shown Fairfax Water's distribution system to be well under the Maximum Contaminant Level specified by the EPA.
